FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
What will it cost me to tint my house?
To get a true and fair estimate you should have someone come out to you home to
measure and give you a quote. If you need to get an idea of the cost to
establish whether it is within your budget, most companies can give you a
ballpark figure over the phone if you know the number of windows you have and
the square footage. (go to how to calculate square footage). Be prepared to
answer a few more questions like “Are there high windows?” “Are the windows
easily accessible ie are there any obstacle in front of them?” “What kind of
window coverings do you have?”
-
Can I do it myself?
You may be able to, but keep a few things in mind. Any film manufactures
warranty will be voided if you do your own installation. Film is very
unforgiving and if it is creased or damaged during preparation and
installation, chances are you will have to discard that piece of film.
-
What is the best film?
Every manufacturer and most installers will tell you their film is the best.
From our experience there is no one best film that will satisfy everyone’s
needs. If you choose a film from one of the major manufactures that have a
manufacture back warranty, you are making good choice. (internal link to names
of manufactures).
-
How can I be sure I am getting a quality film?
There are many excellent quality films available but from our experience there
is no one best film that will satisfy everyone’s needs. If you choose a film
from one of the major manufactures that have a manufacture back warranty, you
are making good choice. (internal link to names of manufactures).
-
Will window film cause my windows to break?
Some glass should not be tinted. Your tint professional should be able to
assess if your windows are not compatible to window film. Most residential
glass can be tinted although using a dark film may be unwise in certain
situations. Very large windows, curved glass, irregular shaped glass and double
pane windows should not be tinted with a film that is too dark. Film
manufacturers recommendations should be followed closely in these incidences.
Plastic, plexiglass, laminated glass and wired glass should also be accompanied
by film manufactures written compatibility statement if tinting is installed.
-
What do I need to know about film on double pane windows?
Due to their construction involving two pieces or glass separated by an air
space, double pane windows can experience greater degrees of expansion,
increasing the stress on the unit. Some of the darker films can cause excessive
heat build up and may cause glass breakage or seal failure due to thermal
stress. Make sure you are offered and chose a film that the film manufacturer
deems compatible with double pane windows.
-
Will my window warranty become void if I tint my windows?
If you have a new home you may have a window warranty with your builder which
may become void if you install window film. Most of the larger film
manufactures have glass breakage and seal failure warranty for many of their
residential films. Each film manufacturer has their own warranty specific to
their line of film and there are differences between the companies. Your Tint
Professional should be able to advise you and satisfy your concerns in this
regard.
-
Will the film stop my furniture from fading? Window
film will not completely eliminate fading, however it will block up to 99% of
UV rays which are the main cause of fading. It is generally considered that UV
contributes to approximately 40% of fading, heat approx 25%, visible light
approx 25% and the other 10% miscellaneous factors. By installing window film
you are being as kind as you possibly can to your possessions while still
keeping your view outside.

WHAT FILM CAN DO FOR COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES
-
Case Study This property was tinted in 1990.
The building engineer wanted to cut down on his energy usage and cost. The
building already had very efficient glazing so prior to tinting an energy
analysis was performed in order to establish if the benefits would outweigh the
cost. South California Edison Company was given details of the type of film to
be used, the glass areas to be treated along with the size and orientation of
the building. This, along with other information supplied by the building’s
engineering department, gave Edison the ability to estimated savings for the
owners. A week into the job and only 1/3 of the floors completed, the building
engineer reported needing to adjust his HVAC as the floors with the tinting
completed were already experiencing the benefits of the film and getting
“COLD.” The customer was very happy! FYI – This building was tinted using two
Film Star Machines, one full time tinter, two part-time tinters and two
part-time assistants. The job was completed in a record 21 days.
-
In General: Heat Reduction and Energy Savings
Provided the correct film is applied to the glass, window tinting will reduce
the amount of heat entering your facility, which adds to the general comfort of
the occupier and has the potential of reducing energy cost by decreasing the
need to run the HVAC as long. Commercial films can reject up to 80% of total
solar energy that hits the glass. Be aware some types of glass are not
compatible with many of the window films. For example: Wired glass, large sized
annealed glass, laminated glass, double and triple pane insulated units are
limited in their tintability.
-
Enhance Appearance
Film can enhance you property by giving it a more uniform look. Where blinds
and other window coverings can be adjusted by the occupier, window film is
permanently fixed to the glass, so the overall exterior appearance is more
constant, whether the blinds are open closed or somewhere in-between.
-
Reduce Fading
- Ultra Violet (UV) Protection Most window films, whether clear or the darkest
available claim to block 95-99% of the UV rays. UV rays are a major contributor
to fading. It is generally considered that UV contributes to approximately 40%
of fading, heat contributes approx 25%, visible light approx 25% and the other
10% miscellaneous factors. As commercial films are generally more efficient in
blocking heat and light than the residential films, the interior furnishings
are getting great protection and prolonging their life.
-
Increase Safety and Security As window film tends to
hold shattered glass together, it offers a great built in safety feature.
Although not guaranteed to hold glass together, it does offer an extra barrier
and in many cases hold broken glass in place reducing the potential danger of
flying glass fragments. If safety and/or security is a concern, there are films
available that offer greater shatter resistance. They are thicker and usually
have a more aggressive adhesive than the standard solar control films.

AUTOMOTIVE
Click

Not everyone has their car tinted for the same reason, consequently there are
many different auto tints to accommodate personal preferences. Keep in mind
some states have strict laws on auto tinting and allowable Visible Light
Transmission (VLT). You should research the appropriate laws for your state. If
a darker film is not allowed in your state or not to your liking, you should be
aware there is a large range of auto films available with high VLT while still
giving excellent heat rejection and UV protection.
BENEFITS OF AUTO TINTING Heat Rejection Depending on the film chosen, window
tint will block varying amounts of heat from entering your vehicle, keeping it
cooler and increasing the efficiency of the air conditioner.

FACTS ABOUT WINDOW FILM
-
Heat Reduction
Tinted window films applied to glass will reduce the amount of heat entering
your home. The amount of heat reduction will depend on the film you choose.
There are many different residential films to choose from but your typical
“light” film will block in the vicinity of 45% of the heat coming through. The
“medium” around 50% and the “dark” 65%. These figures are all approximations
and you will find some “light”, “medium” and “dark” films that have
efficiencies on either side to the percentages quoted.
-
Reduce Fading - Ultra Violet (UV) Protection
Most window films, whether clear or the darkest available claim to block 95-99%
of the UV rays. UV rays are a major contributor to fading. By blocking out
95-99% of these harmful rays you are being as kind to your furniture as you
possibly can while still being able to enjoy it. It is generally considered
that UV contributes to approximately 40% of fading, heat approx 25%, visible
light approx 25% and the other 10% miscellaneous factors.
-
Glare Reduction
Any tinted film applied to glass will reduce the amount of light entering and
reduce glare. The darker the film, the less light will enter and the greater
the degree of glare reduction. Personal preference and needs will guide you in
your choice. Be aware that small samples of film tend to look darker than
installed film that covers an entire window. To get a better idea of how
installed film will look, hold the sample up to your eyes (pretend it’s sun
glasses) and then look at the window you are wanting tinted. That’s about how
dark it will look once its tinted with that film.
-
Safety Benefits As window film tents to hold shattered
glass together, it offers a great built in safety feature. This particular
quality of window film offers a degree of personal safety for your family in
the event of mishap whether an accidental breakage, an attempted break in, or
act of nature as in earthquake or violent storm. Although not guaranteed to
hold glass together, it does offer an extra barrier and in many cases hold
broken glass in place reducing the potential danger of flying glass fragments.

GLOSSARY OF GLASS TINTING TECHNICAL TERMS
-
Glazing System
The combination of glass and any other heat and environmental control materials
which occupy the opening. Eg: Glass plus window film.
-
Total Solar Energy
Covers the whole spectrum of energy radiated by the sun. This includes heat,
visible light, ultra violet (UV) rays and other electromagnetic rays.
-
Shading Coefficient
Is the ratio of solar heat gained through a glazing system (filmed glass)
compared to the solar heat gained through clear untreated glass. The lower the
number the more efficient the film. (This explanation has been simply put. All
film manufacturers do their testing under specific conditions using a specific
glass type).
-
Transmittance
The amount of solar energy that passes through a glazing system compared to the
amount that strikes the surface.
-
Absorptance
The amount of solar energy absorbed by a glazing system compared to the amount
that strikes the surface.
-
Reflectance
The amount of solar energy reflected by the glazing system compared to the
amount that strikes the surface.
-
VLT – Visible Light Transmission The percentage of
visible light transmitted through the glazing system. (This is an indication of
how dark the film is and of particular importance when choosing auto films)

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A GLASS TINTING COMPANY
It’s always good if you can get a recommendation from some one. It’s also
important to feel confident and comfortable with the representative/s of the
company. You should be able to ask them anything that is relevant to the
product and your needs and you should feel satisfied with the answers. A good
healthy company should not feel the need to “put down” their competition. Many
states also require contractors licenses for work above a certain amount.
